BE WHO YOU WANNA BE
A playful, funky album, born from the desire to play live again; a playful and funky band that will tour extensively in Belgium and the Netherlands from April.
The first single 'Walk On Red, Stop On Green', which is included in the Radio 1 playlist and the Vox list, is a song similar to 'My Favorite Things' from 'The Sound Of Music': 'If anything bothers me, and I'm feeling unhappy, I just try and think of nice things! What kind of things? Song starts!
The song sets the tone of this new album. A simple structure, over which a web of rhythm is woven using instruments from old drum machines: the Roland CR-78, in dialogue with live drums and percussion. Lots of sax, tenor and baritone! A pumping bass. A frisky pizzicato violin. Vocals based on the 'Boy Scout Trail' principle: the leader sings and the others repeat. And then of course the classic keyboards: the Fender Rhodes, the Hohner Clavinette D6, the L-100 Hammond organ. And many analogue synthesizers: a rippling Juno-106 draws the path to be followed, which is crisscrossed with phrases from other museum pieces: Crumar's Stratus, Farfisa's Synthorchestra, Sequential's Prophet-10. Or the Casio Club M-100, which is actually a toy, but which has been subtly coloring SKC's songs for years!
These instruments are the sound and subject of the song. The singer praises with great enthusiasm the skills and ingenuity of its builders. Through years of collecting and restoring, SKC has surrounded himself with a very extensive collection of musical instruments. They are the raw materials for the many projects he works on as a songwriter, producer, arranger and composer of film and theater music. But his enthusiasm also extends to other, local makers: luthiers, artisanal clothes, shoe and hat makers, bicycle factories, the small workshops spread across this small land, where, despite the crushing competition of mass production, wonderful creations made with heart and soul and a lot of know-how, see the light, day in and day out.
And then there are the big examples: Prince and his entourage, an artist who SKC has followed with increasing admiration since he pulled 'Controversy' out of a record bin in the corner of a small shop in Antwerp's Kammenstraat in the early 1980s. Or John Lee Hooker, who knows how to create an irresistible groove with his restrained power and clicking heel. And Little Feat, the band of the legendary Lowell George, whose irresistible grooves of, for example, their 'Spanish Moon' have left a lasting impression on SKC.
SKC has often delved deep into the repertoire of artists he values highly in search of gems to adapt, be they forgotten or not.
So it is on this album!
With his 6-piece band, he interprets 'The Future', the opening song of the soundtrack that Prince made in 1989 for Tim Burton's idiosyncratic version of Batman. A dystopian tale about a world that is succumbing to drugs, violence and exploitation, in which spiritual hygiene and ethical conduct are put forward as the solution.
'Suspicion' by Dez Mona is dressed in a robe of tranquil funk, based on a driving Fender Rhodes riff and an off-centre snare, which gives the song, despite the melancholy of the lyrics, an almost cheerful quality.
'C'est Comment qu'on Freine' from Alain Bashung's dark album 'Play Blessures' from 1982, with lyrics by Serge Gainsbourg, is, in contrast to the cold and atonal arrangement of the original, immersed in a warm bath of funky guitars and brass. It hasn’t been since Zita Swoon's 2007 album 'Big City' that we’ve heard SKC sing in the French language, but his love for it is still intact.
And your own work?
'Love Me Like A Prayer' is about an intense love that endures despite the passage of time and its turbulence: a plea to separate what is really important from what is not.
'Take A Little Time' is a song about friendship; about taking time to be with someone, to share stories. With a beautiful quote from the 11th century Persian poet and philosopher Rumi: 'Far beyond ideas of doing evil and doing good lies a field. I'll meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about it.'
'Alone & Attracted', about an unattainable love; about a desire so great that the person who carries it is willing to deny himself and pretend to be someone else. A story about failure, about an all-consuming desire, about a passion that is gradually starving.
'So Much Love' is inspired by the film 'Zeitgeist - Moving Forward', the 3rd part of Peter Joseph's Zeitgeist trilogy. SKC already wrote a number of songs from Joseph's 1st part on his previous album 'Making Sense Of Infinity': an attempt to capture the frustration and anger that exists today in a song.

BIO STEF KAMIL CARLENS (2024)
1993 was the year Stef Kamil Carlens first appeared on stage and drew the attention of both press and public with the EP 'Zea' by dEUS and 'Jintro Travels The Word In A Skirt' by his own A Beatband (later Moondog Jr. and finally Zita Swoon). Fast forward 30 years: he has recently completed his 20th album in his studio The Rabbit Field near Antwerp. During these 30 years, he has given several hundred concerts in Belgium and abroad, ranging from raw blues to playful theatricality, melancholy, and super funky escapades.
As an artist, it is impossible to classify Carlens in any single category. He is a singer, musician, composer, producer, theatre maker, designer and visual artist. His journey can be roughly divided into 3 major periods.
From 1993 to 2009: SKC operated primarily under the name Moondog Jr., and especially Zita Swoon, who received the first of several gold records for the album 'I Paint Pictures On A Wedding Dress' recorded in New Orléans in 1999. They travelled extensively throughout Europe for many years with their intense and explosive concerts. 2009 was an anniversary year, and this period is wrapped up with 5 sold-out concerts in Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam and a “Best Of” album.
From 2009 to 2016: SKC renamed his group as Zita Swoon Group. They functioned more as an artistic company than a pop group. Using music as their point of departure, they interact with artists from other disciplines and cultures. They travelled to Africa, worked with Rosas and Needcompany and ultimately created 5 productions and 4 studio albums.
From 2017 to present: SKC plays under his own name. He performs songs from his last 2 studio albums, combined with a selection from his wide-ranging extensive repertoire, alternating between working with his group and giving notable solo performances, in which he plays several instruments simultaneously as if he were an octopus.
In 2019, he won a Music Industry Award in the “Best Musician” category.
With the one-off formation The Gates Of Eden, he deep dived into Bob Dylan's repertoire in 2021, which gave rise to a streaming concert, a live album and a tour in 2023. SKC and his group could recently be seen at the KMSKA in Antwerp (where he is artist in residence) giving four wonderful performances during which, inspired by a selection of works from the museum's collection, they performed compositions with automated instruments, with the title: “Meeting At The Museum: Humans, Robots, Wooden Friends, Space and Time”.
So new music in 2024! In January, part of the veil was lifted with the funky first single 'Walk On Red, Stop On Green'. SKC's live band turned sizzling septet, is gearing up to tour, starting in April, which neatly coincides with the release of the brand-new album.

Un album ludique et funky né de l'envie de jouer sur scène et un groupe ludique et funky qui tournera en Belgique et aux Pays-Bas à partir d'avril.
Le premier single «Walk On Red, Stop On Green» inclus dans la playlist de Radio 1 et la liste Vox est une chanson comme «My Favorite Things» du film «The Sound Of Music»: «Si quelque chose me dérange, et je me sens malheureuse, j'essaie juste de penser à de belles choses ! Quel genre de choses?» … Et la chanson commence!
La chanson donne le ton de ce nouvel album. Une structure simple sur laquelle se tisse une toile de rythmes à partir d'anciens drums machines comme le Roland CR-78 qui dialogue avec la batterie et les percussions. Beaucoup de sax ténor et le baryton! Une basse pompante. Un violon pizzicato fringant. Le chant basé sur le principe du « Boy Scout Trail»; le leader chante et les autres répètent. Et puis bien sûr les claviers classiques: le Fender Rhodes, le Hohner Clavinette D6, l'orgue Hammond L-100. Et de nombreux synthétiseurs analogiques: un Juno-106 ondoyant et traçant le chemin à parcourir rencontre d'autres pièces de musée: le Stratus de Crumar, le Synthorchestra Farfisa, le Prophet-10 Sequential. Ou encore le Casio Club M-100 qui est en fait un jouet et qui colore subtilement depuis de nombreuses années les chansons de SKC!
Ces instruments sont le son et le sujet de la chanson. Le chanteur vante avec beaucoup d'enthousiasme les compétences et l'ingéniosité de ses constructeurs. Au fil des années de collecte et de restauration, SKC s'est entouré d'une vaste collection d'instruments de musique. Ils sont la matière première des nombreux projets sur lesquels il travaille en tant qu'auteur-compositeur, producteur, arrangeur et compositeur de musiques de film ou de théâtre. Mais son enthousiasme s'étend aussi à d'autres fabricants locaux: les luthiers, les artisans confectionneurs de vêtements, les fabricants de chaussures et de chapeaux, les petites fabriques de vélos, les petits ateliers répartis dans tout le pays où malgré la concurrence écrasante de la production de masse, avec cœur et âme et beaucoup de savoir-faire naissent jour après jour de merveilleuses créations.
Et puis il y a les grands exemples: Prince et son entourage, un artiste que SKC commence à suivre avec une admiration grandissante depuis qu'il a découvert le disque "Controversy" dans le coin d'un petit magasin de la Kammenstraat à Anvers au début des années 1980. Puis John Lee Hooker qui sait créer un groove irrésistible avec une puissance subtile et un claquement de talon. Et Little Feat le groupe du légendaire Lowell George aux grooves irrésistibles comme par exemple "Spanish Moon" qui a beaucoup marqué SKC.
SKC a souvent fouillé le répertoire d'artistes qu'il apprécie beaucoup à la recherche de joyaux oubliés à interpréter. Et c’est également sur cet album!
Avec son groupe de 7 musiciens, il interprète «The Future», la chanson d'ouverture de la bande originale que Prince a réalisée en 1989 pour le Batman de Tim Burton. Une histoire dystopique sur un monde qui succombe à la drogue, à la violence et à l’exploitation dans laquelle hygiène spirituelle et conduite éthique sont proposées comme solutions.
«Suspicion» de Dez Mona revêt une teinte funk tranquille basée sur un riff entraînant du Fender Rhodes et d’une caisse claire décentrée procurant à la chanson malgré la mélancolie des paroles une qualité presque joyeuse.
«C'est Comment qu'on Freine» du sombre album "Play Blessures" d'Alain Bashung de 1982 avec des paroles de Serge Gainsbourg est contrairement à l'arrangement froid et atonal de l'original plongé dans un bain chaud de guitares funky et de laiton. C'est depuis l'album 'Big City' de Zita Swoon en 2007 que l'on l’entend chanter en français et son amour pour çà est encore toujours intact.
Et à propos du propre travail?
«Love Me Like A Prayer» à propos d’un amour intense qui perdure malgré le passage du temps et de ses turbulences. Un plaidoyer pour séparer ce qui est vraiment important de ce qui ne l’est pas.
«Take A Little Time» est une chanson sur l'amitié. Prendre le temps d'être avec quelqu'un, de partager des histoires. Avec une belle citation du poète et philosophe persan Rumi du 11ème siècle : «Bien au-delà des idées sur le mal et le bien se trouve un champ. Là je te rencontrerai. Quand l'âme se couche dans cette herbe, le monde est trop rempli pour en parler.»
"Alone and attracted" sur un amour inaccessible. D'un désir si grand que celui qui le porte est prêt à se renier et à se faire passer pour quelqu'un d'autre. Une histoire d’échec, d’un désir dévorant, d’une passion qui meurt peu à peu de faim.
"So Much Love" est inspiré du film "Zeitgeist - Moving Forward", le 2ème volet de la trilogie de Peter Joseph. SKC a déjà écrit un certain nombre de chansons dès la première partie de son précédent album « Making Sense Of Infinity ». Une tentative de capturer la frustration et la colère qui existent aujourd'hui dans une chanson.

En tant qu’artiste, il est impossible de classer Carlens dans une seule case. Il est chanteur, musicien, compositeur, producteur, créateur de théâtre, designer et artiste visuel.
Son parcours peut être en gros divisée en 3 grandes périodes;
De 1993 à 2009, il a principalement opéré sous le nom de Moondog Jr. et surtout Zita Swoon, qui a reçu le premier de plusieurs disques d'or pour l'album 'I Paint Pictures On A Wedding Dress' enregistré à la Nouvelle-Orléans en 1999 et qui a beaucoup voyagé à travers l'Europe pendant des années avec leurs concerts intenses et explosifs. 2009 est une année anniversaire et une période se termine avec 5 concerts à guichets fermés à Paris, Bruxelles et Amsterdam et un album Best Of.
De 2009 à 2016, SKC a renommé son groupe Zita Swoon Group. Ils fonctionnaient davantage comme une compagnie que comme un groupe pop. Partant de la musique, ils interagissent avec des artistes d'autres disciplines et cultures. Ils ont voyagé en Afrique, travaillé avec Rosas et Needcompany et créé finalement 5 performances et 4 albums studio.
De 2017 à aujourd'hui, SKC joue sous son propre nom. Il interprète les chansons de ses 2 derniers albums studio, combinées à une sélection de son vaste répertoire, en alternance avec son groupe et dans des performances solo remarquables, dans lesquelles il joue simultanément de plusieurs instruments telle une pieuvre. En 2019, il remporte un Music Industry Award dans la catégorie « Meilleur musicien ».
Avec la formation ponctuelle The Gates Of Eden, il plonge en profondeur dans le répertoire de Bob Dylan en 2021, donnant lieu à un concert en streaming, un album live et une tournée en 2023. Alors nouvelle musique en 2024! En janvier, un bout du voile est levé avec le premier single funky 'Walk On Red, Stop On Green'. Le groupe live de SKC devenu un septuor torride, se prépare à partir en tournée à partir d'avril. Le tout nouvel album sort également à ce moment-là.

Een speels, funky album, ontstaan uit het verlangen om net dat ook weer eens live te zijn; een speelse en funky band die vanaf april gaat touren in België en Nederland.
Eerste single 'Walk On Red, Stop On Green' die meedraait in de playlist van Radio 1 en de Voxlijst is een song zoals 'My Favorite Things' uit de film 'The Sound Of Music': 'If anything bothers me, and I'm feeling unhappy, I just try and think of nice things! What kind of things? …’ Song starts!
De song zet de toon van dit nieuwe album. Een eenvoudige structuur, waarover een web van ritmiek wordt geweven gebruik makend van een instrumentarium van een oude drum machine: de Roland CR-78, in dialoog met live drums en percussie. Veel sax, tenor en bariton! Een pompende bas. Een dartele pizzicato viool. Vocals naar het 'Boy Scout Trail' principe; de leider zingt voor en de anderen herhalen. En dan natuurlijk de classic keyboards: de Fender Rhodes, de Hohner Clavinette D6, het L-100 Hammond orgel. En véél analoge synthesizers: een kabbelende Juno-106 tekent het te volgen pad, dat wordt doorkruist met frases uit ander museumstukken: de Stratus van Crumar, de Synthorchestra van Farfisa, de Prophet-10 van Sequential. Of nog de Casio Club M-100, wat eigenlijk een stuk speelgoed is, maar al jarenlang SKC's songs subtiel kleurt!
Deze instrumenten zijn de sound én het onderwerp van de song. De zanger prijst met groot enthousiasme de skills en de vindingrijkheid van de bouwers ervan. SKC heeft zich door jarenlang te verzamelen en te restaureren omringd met een zeer uitgebreide verzameling muziekinstrumenten. Ze zijn de grondstoffen voor de vele projecten waaraan hij werkt als songwriter, producer, arrangeur en componist van film-en theatermuziek. Maar z'n geestdrift breidt zich ook uit naar andere, lokale, makers: luthiers, ambachtelijke kleer, schoen -en hoedenmakers, fietsfabriekjes, de kleine ateliers verspreid over dit landje, waar ondanks de verpletterde concurrentie van massa productie, met hart en ziel en héél véél knowhow dag in dag uit wonderlijke creaties het licht zien.
En dan zijn er nog de grote voorbeelden: Prince en z'n gevolg, een artiest die SKC sinds hij begin jaren 80 in een hoekje van een klein winkeltje in de Antwerpse Kammenstraat 'Controversy' uit een platenbak trok, met stijgende bewondering is beginnen volgen. Of John Lee Hooker, die met z'n stille kracht en klikkende hiel een onweerstaanbare groove weet neer te zetten. En Little Feat, de band van de legendarische Lowell George, wiens onweerstaanbare grooves van bijvoorbeeld hun 'Spanish Moon' op SKC een diepe indruk maakte.
SKC is al vaker diep in het repertoire van artiesten die hij hoogschat gedoken op zoek naar al dan niet vergeten parels om te bewerken.

'Take A Little Time' is een lied over vriendschap. Over tijd nemen om bij iemand te zijn, om verhalen te delen. Met een prachtige quote van de 11de eeuwse Persische dichter en filosoof Rumi: 'Ver buiten ideeën over kwaad doen en goed doen ligt een veld. Daar zal ik je ontmoeten. Als de ziel zich neer legt in dat gras, is de wereld te vol om het er over te hebben.'
'Alone & Attracted' over een onbereikbare liefde. Over een verlangen zo groot, dat degene die het in zich draagt bereid is zichzelf te verloochenen en zich als iemand anders voor te doen. Een relaas over mislukken, over een verscheurend begeren, over een passie die stilaan uithongert.
'So Much Love' is geïnspireerd door de film 'Zeitgeist - Moving Forward', het 2de luik uit de trilogie van Peter Joseph. SKC schreef reeds op z'n vorige album 'Making Sense Of Infinity' een aantal songs ontsproten uit het eerste luik. Een poging om de frustratie en de woede die vandaag leeft in een song te vatten.

1993 was het jaar dat Stef Kamil Carlens met de E.P.’s ‘Zea’ van dEUS en ‘Jintro Travels The Word In A Skirt’ van z’n eigen A Beatband (later Moondog Jr. en uiteindelijk Zita Swoon) voor het eerst op de radar van pers en publiek verscheen. 30 jaar later werkt hij z’n 20ste album af in z’n eigen The Rabbit Field studio nabij Antwerpen en heeft hij vele honderden live shows op de teller in binnen-en buitenlanden, die qua vorm reiken van rauwe blues, speelse theatraliteit, doorvoelde melancholie tot super-funky escapades.
Carlens is als artiest onmogelijk in één vakje te klasseren. Hij is zanger, muzikant, componist, producer, theatermaker, ontwerper én beeldend kunstenaar. Zijn parcours is ruwweg te verdelen in 3 grote periodes;
Van 1993 tot 2009 opereert hij voornamelijk onder de namen Moondog Jr. en vooral Zita Swoon, dat voor het in New Orleans opgenomen album ‘I Paint Pictures On A Wedding Dress’ hun eerste gouden plaat ontving en jarenlang uitgebreid door Europa reisde met hun intense en explosieve live shows. 2009 is een jubileumjaar en met 5 uitverkochte shows in Parijs, Brussel en Amsterdam en een Best Of album wordt een periode afgesloten.
Van 2009 tot 2016 doopt SKC z’n band om naar Zita Swoon Group, dat eerder functioneert als een gezelschap dat, uitgaande van de muziek, in interactie gaat met kunstenaars uit andere disciplines en uit andere culturen. Zo reizen ze naar Afrika, werken samen met Rosas en Needcompany en creëren uiteindelijk 5 voorstellingen en 4 studio-albums.
Van 2017 tot vandaag speelt SKC onder z’n eigen naam. De songs van 2 studio-albums, gecombineerd met een selectie uit zijn uitgebreide repertoire brengt hij afwisselend met z’n 5-koppige band en in opmerkelijke solo-performances, waarin hij als een octopus een veelvoud instrumenten tegelijk speelt. In 2019 wint hij een Music Industry Award in de categorie ‘Beste Muzikant’.
Met de gelegenheidsformatie The Gates Of Eden duikt hij in 2021 diep in het repertoire van Bob Dylan, wat resulteert in een gestreamd concert, een live-album en een toer.
Recent waren SKC en z’n band, ondertussen nog te zien in het KMSKA in Antwerpen (waar hij Artist in Residence is) met vier wonderlijke performances waarin ze, geïnspireerd door een selectie werken uit de collectie van het museum, composities met geautomatiseerde instrumenten brachten onder de titel: ‘Meeting At The Museum: Humans, Robots, Wooden Friends, Space & Time’.
In 2024 dus nieuwe muziek! Half januari wordt een tip van de sluier gelicht met de eerste funky singel ‘Walk On Red, Stop On Green’. SKC’s live band nu dus een stomend septet, bereidt zich voor om te toeren vanaf april. Het fonkelnieuwe album verschijnt ook rond die tijd.
